You certainly do! The Leclerc stuff didn't just fray.....it literally disintegrated into millions of little pieces of plastic, or whatever it was woven from. Rice paper, probably :D Their 'bâche pour cultivation' is a 2mx3m sheet of black plastic exactly like that used for bin bags.

The Leclerc stuff sounds familiar QS ! A long time ago I bought some really good strong stuff. It was bright emerald green and at least 1m50 wide but I've never seen it since. It made an excellent wind break too ! Probably a question of looking around a bit more ..

There are a few possibilities....I've used Jardinet for several purchases and can recommend them. Equally, for polytunnel covers, Terres du Sud sell by the metre and it's good, long-lasting sheeting, (cats notwithstanding :D ).

I have used Tissnet.fr in recent years and have been very impressed with the quality. They might be more expensive than some of the others but I’ve found them good value.

Thanks for the recommendation, Chappers51! I've seen that name crop up ( :D ) elsewhere. Very useful to know.

Thank you, QS and Chappers, for the links/names. I've just looked on Tissnet and found the thick stuff I bought years ago : it's brise-vue rather than toile de paillage ....

Not strictly ground membrane, if it's made to be used as wind-break. But if that works and is flexible enough - sounds perfect!

The type we used at the Pépinière (more likely 2m10 wide) was a thickish grade, and lastest for years. So yes, you get what you pay for - from a retailer like Gamm Vert it's about 1,50euro per sq metre. Maybe slightly cheaper off the roll from an horticulteur.

Depending where you're putting it, the edges need tucking under (like a hem) and pinning down, or weighed down with stones.

No, much too good ! It's brilliant for closing in an open side of a shed in the winter and can be rolled up in summer. I wouldn't waste it as paillage ! I've used the thin stuff weighed down with stones and earth round the edges and it certainly works well but will get some better quality for this year.

We bought our polytunnel in 2020, from Gamm Vert. In the summer we take the plastic off and store it, then in the autumn put it back on.

We've got it in a fairly shady spot, in fact too shady as last summer was wet and not overly hot.

How does the plastic 'stay put' during windy days if it's not buried at the edges?
