I am a member of several of these buy and sell groups in my area, albeit anything worth buying is still miles away, and the remainder is normally a load of pony. I put a metal "headboard / bed end" on there, and it elevates it on to Facebook Marketplace, from which, and I have seen it before, the enquiries relate to someone supposedly miles away, who wants to send a courier to pick it up, after they have paid, presumably by cheque. Does this mean that the cheque arrives, looks as though it has been credited to the bank, then when the item has been collected the cheque bounces.

Don't share or try to sell anything on Marketplace - you should be able to opt out of that. It can been seen by the whole world, regardless of whether they're on facebook, and you'll get nothing but grief and scammers.

Stick to the groups where you actually have to join and there are admin controlling it.

The only problem there is that there doesn't seem to be a large enough audience for anything you put on there, and the size of the country makes it non viable to travel to collect anything. I might try Leboncoin, I have had more success with that in the past, a much wider and reachable public.

LeBonCoin have also introduced a secure payment option via their site. It's long-winded but does take out the uncertainty factor if you're sending or receiving goods by La Poste or Mondial Relay.

Apart from vide greniers and an expat site in Brittany I've got no way to sell things. I keep them until I'm desperate for the space and then they go to the deshitterie. Heartbreaking really.

I spoke to an antique dealer (good reputation) who said that if you can't sell something, you should look at the use you've had out of it and give it away. I've done that with several things via a couple of Facebook groups. We had a sofa, over 80 years old that we had refurbished 30 years ago and was in excellent condition - I just couldn't sell it, it was too "old country cottage style". I couldn't bear to just throw it away and fortunately a couple from one of the FB giveaway groups were delighted with it.
The antiques man said that the only things that make money are top quality antiques, everything else just depreciates. "Brown" furniture doesn't sell anywhere ....
