I can't see that they are worried about an invasion from the West. It would priobably lead to nuclear war and no-one wins. It's simple Empire building and desire to hold an economically attractive territory.
An invasion from the west does not need to mean troops and guns.
Today's take overs are much more subtle than that.
Witness: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Ukraine

Perhaps a couple of books as a recommendation "The road to Russia, Arctic convoys 1942-45" Bernard Edwards, "Stalingrad" Rupert Matthews.

@exile spot
I'm assuming the only invasion would be onto Russian territory. The old bogeyman from the West, originally Germany.

And before that, France. 1812 and all that.

Just as an aside:

So it'll be interesting to see what the Tories come up with as a "brutal sanction", against their biggest donors. :shh:

There is very little the west can do in addition to what it has already been doing since 2014.

Banning a few banks and oligarchs is just theatre.

I hope the gas pipelines in Ukraine don't get taken out.

And pushing Russia towards China is not a good move.
