Fuel prices (petrol & diesel)

Yesterday we noticed at our local Intermarché the price of petrol SP98 was 1,91€ and going past there again this evening saw it had gone up to 2,07€. This morning I went to the dentist in Saint-Malo and passed a garage in town selling SP98 at a heady 2,35€.

There was an item on the news about farmers and possible limits on how much diesel they will be able to buy and it occurred to me that it's possible that if sanctions continue we might be looking at carburant rationing.

In another article I read in one of the French newspapers, it said that sales of camping cars had rocketed in the last year or so. They might well find their wings clipped ....
Will those who've invested in electric cars be feeling relieved or even smug ??

Well, electricity prices in France are being state-controlled - but elsewhere like the UK the prices are increasing by similar percentages to petrol. From my UK supplier:

We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.860p to 29.239p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 24.007p to 37.918p per day.

That is 40% on consumption and 58% on the standing charge.

Those with their own generating capability, on the other hand, may be very happy.

Our car gets used once a week for shopping, the van three or four times a week for work. I don't think we can cut down anymore than that. We'll soon be needing to buy red diesel for the ride-on mowers and tractor, and petrol for the smaller machines. I wonder if we'll have to produce our Siret No. to prove we're agriculteurs, and so eligible for red diesel.

Still astonishing, so early in the year, to hear people already mowing their grass. Surely it can't be that long already? We don't start mowing until at least the end of March for clients - and even then it's usually only once a month/every three weeks? Grass might be allowed to grow a little longer (and the accompanying lawn flowers).

I think someone is profiteering.

Crude Oil is $115/barrel approx. Petrol is $2.1 per litre.

Previous peaks in April 2000 and June 2008 were $137 and $180. From the coarse data I can see, petrol was $1 and $1.5 per litre at those times.

So - greedy oil companies? greedy forecourt owners? greedy Tresor Public?

No, you don't ! I always used red diesel for our tractor - I'd take a load of 20L bidons to the garage and fill 'em up.

I've given part of our grass one long cut as it was about a foot high, longer where the dogs had peed. It gives the lawn flowers light and space The climate up here is quite different from down south and inland : we've had one very light frost this winter and at the moment the temps are going up to around 12°C + during the day and it's been very dry recently.

No, you don't ! I always used red diesel for our tractor - I'd take a load of 20L bidons to the garage and fill 'em up.

We've also never had to in the past - but my question is in response to prices rocketing now, and some might look to getting red diesel, then putting it in their road vehicles when they get home - illegal I know, but that's human nature.

@Bayleaf Red diesel would stain a car petrol tank and I'm not sure many would risk it. I've just remembered that the garage would give me a customs form each time - we often saw the douanes near Saumur, possibly because of the motorway. I can't remember if I ha to give the tractor's immatriculation number .... Yes, I had to use it on the road to get from A to B.

Diesel €2.18 a litre is what I paid this morning, that was from one of the big supermarkets that is usually the cheapest.

It wasn’t uncommon in the Uk,to have Customs and Excise ’Dipping ‘ vehicles to make sure they weren’t using red diesel
I needed petrol last night,Asda was 152 .9 a litre ,the Sainsbury’s a mile away 149.9 a big difference
