Any signs of spring?
Next time try "Pisse en Lits" - literally pee the bed - a note to their diuretic effect.Sparkle wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 3:03 pm @elsie what a beautiful colour and I'm not a fan of yellow! You have reminded me of some years ago when talking to a French neighbour about his dandelions I thought I was very clever in remembering to call them dent de lion - well what a waste of time time that was as he had no idea. I was given a lingering vacant look then "mauvaise herbs" he saidSo I then tried it on another French neighbour who also didn't know they were called dent de lion - "mauvaise herbes" he said and who then went around the corner to his son's house, brought him back with him and asked me to repeat the name - vacant look yet again. They thought I was making it up so I had to nip home and return with my massive dictionary to prove it - at that point a bottle of red wine came out and we all sat down to a glass to celebrate! Well I was exhausted by then & thought to myself that'll teach you to be Miss Clever Cloggs

I think they were being polite to use mauvaise herbes - weeds.

Here, the arrival of dandelions always used to be the season of "backsides in the air" as the (old) ladies of the village went out picking the leaves in the fields. Fresh green leaves for salads and soups? Now dandelions turn up on restaurant menus.

Raffi and I were out just before 7 on this cold and frosty morning and heard our first cuckoo, he even stopped sniffing so he could listen to it.

Bums in the air here too. Time was when there'd be a team with baskets working its way across a large field at first light. I notice the municipal gardeners in this commune carefully leave the pisssenlits growing among the shrubs.

I will be away for an Easter holiday and thought I might miss the snake's head fritillaries flowering here. I planted about 50 over fifteen years ago but only a few survived the first few years (too damp, the cold winters and hungry burrowing animals?) The survivors have slowly multiplied. Looking at photographs from previous years the earliest flowers I have recorded are 4 April with the majority in flower about 15-20 April. But this is from today so I should see some in flower in the week or so.
