I didn't know those creeps were in ERG too (apart from Francois), but logical I suppose. Really Smug has apparently urged ERG's 80 MPs to vote Truss (why?).
I've known quite a few MPs in the past from all parties, some silver-spoon types and others ordinary bods. MPs have to be confident, but they don't have to be arrogant or rude (remember Richard Cwossman?). Not all are rich, but they all need some dosh to be able to run for office.
The problem comes when their position swells their heads (and other parts) leaving them exposed to all sorts of temptations...

A slight thread wander but I've been re-watching the TV series Boys From The Blackstuff. It's quite heart stirring to see those men unemployed on the dole and trying to get some work on the black for money to feed their families and to see the frustration it causes within their marriage and families - I was aware of similar situations during the miners strikes due to friends & neighbours who worked down the mines - no food banks for help then - tragic and I can quite see a similar situation coming around again.

If enough money finds its fraudulent path into offshore Tory accounts and mismanagement of public funds doesn't come to a halt at some point those days will certainly be back.

I am not sure about the "offshore" bit.

The fraudulent Covid loans and contracts, which for some reason Mr Sunak does not seem interested in pursuing, were probably onshore.

I've often thought about that series, since Brexit in particular, and the despair of Yosser 'gizza job'. Sadly, it could indeed happen again, but people like Mr. Smug will be uplifted by the thought that the potted plants who went to State schools will be fed by all the foodbanks opened during the Tory tenure.

I think the U.K. has a fundamental problem in that it doesn’t pay its politicians enough. Don’t we want the best and wouldn’t it be good to encourage people who have run successful companies to apply. But why should they take a massive drop in salary. Compare a BBC presenter who reads an autocue and gets paid £1.5m a year vs someone who runs a G7 economy, defence and affect all our lives gets £161000. No wonder so much corruption exists as MPs see it as a way to boost their earnings
