Glad you sorted it out LAS. It can be a problem in the summer if it's very hot and the hooves dry out. Our first summer here I had the same problem - the dry sandy soil didn't help. I got through a fair amount of hoof pommade, but it made a huge difference.
My missus paints on the greasy stuff every day to try to avoid the hooves drying out.
I checked the nails I pulled out yesterday & looking at the rust on 'em it seems that the farrier must have filed off most of the clenches when tidying up the hoof which probably explains why the nails pulled though.
He's here now to to put on another shoe so I'll ask him what he thinks.
He's been brilliant during the 19/20 years he's looked after our horses & in his defence he has just recovered from Covid which puts the onset of the lurgy around the time he shoed the horse so maybe he wasn't his normal self. The other three shoes appear to fitted to his normal high standard.
The horses hoof looks like it can be trimmed & shoed, we didn't catch his Covid & with all the nasty things going on in this world it's pretty small beer which'll soon be fixed
