That was from the UK Government Living in France page.
For Switzerland you need to read Living in Switzerland https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-switzerland

Yes - I read that - as I said it is mostly a cut and paste of the information on other countries.

If you were living in Switzerland before 1 January 2021

When you travel, especially within the Schengen area, you should carry with you your residence document (Aufenthaltsbewilligung/Permis de séjour/Permessi di dimora) or frontier worker permit issued under the Citizens’ Rights Agreement, in addition to your valid passport.

You must proactively show your residence document, or other evidence of residence status, if you are asked to show your passport at border control. Other evidence may be your tenancy agreement or a utility bill in your name, dating from 2020. If you have applied for, but not yet received, your residence document, carry your certificate of registration.

If you cannot prove that you are resident in Switzerland, you may be asked additional questions at the border to enter the Schengen area, and your passport may be stamped on entry and exit. This will not affect your rights in Switzerland.

If you have rights under the Citizens’ Rights Agreement, you do not need any extra months on your passport to enter or exit Switzerland.

My concern is that French immigration may not know what is and what is not a valid residence document in other Schengen Countries - particularly when the name on my permit is "Livret pour étrangers" and not a "Permis de séjour" as above.

If you want to travel to the UK, then you need a passport - French (cheaper) or British. ID cards are no longer valid for entry to the UK.

Otherwise no. You say you are not "planning" to go anywhere. Do you have no contacts in the UK who you might need to visit in an emergency? If the answer is absolutely none whatsoever then you do not need a passport. If you do have relatives - parents, uncles, aunts, siblings, children - then life has a nasty habit of biting you on the bum and you may need to get to the UK to offer support in the case of emergency.

Now this has floated to the top, again, I see that I said last August:

Roll on a year, and the expiry of my "Livret pour étrangers", the new permit is indeed a "Permis de séjour" in a seemingly standard format. And so far the French customs have accepted it twice without stamping my passport.

It is not clear what you mean by French ID card? Do you mean a Titre de Séjour with or without EU nationality or a carte nationale d'identité?
For a Titre de Séjour without EU nationality (e.g. for someone with UK nationality) you will need a passport to renew it.

For everyday life you probably don't need a passport. As already mentioned, it is the unplanned which could be a problem.

copied from Strictly legal.

Just to keep travelers from the UK to France informed. If this post is allowed.
My son was denied entry onto his flight from Stansted to Bergerac today because he did not have one year and 3 months left until his passport had to be renewed.
He was told it's a new rule.
Needless to say our grandchildren together with us all were shocked and disappointed!
"If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.
Your passport must be:
Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date."

And an update as to why.
Hi everyone and thank you for your replies.
An update re my son being refused to travel on his flight to France with his family due to him not having one year and three months left on his passport.
This applies if your passport was issued before 2018.
Apparently, after 2018 the usual Government rules apply when traveling to France.
I think Ryanair should make this far more transparent when booking and the Government websites should be clearer as well. Once again thank you for your comments

I'm in the same situation. I have no family in UK and no intention of going back to that disaster zone for any reason. Hopefully the French authorities won't require an up to date passport at some time in the future. I have better things to spend my money on.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

@hughnique

Seems some confusion here - 2018 was the date before which the UK Passport Authorities were rolling over unused portions of a previous passport - giving a passport a possible expiry date more than 10 years after issue.

As for Government's websites being clearer - from: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advic ... quirements

Passport validity

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.

Your passport must be:

Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

I am not sure how they can make the above any clearer. Maybe some people are just too stupid to be allowed out on their own?

I'm only relaying a post from another forum, evidently if I am right this mans son was denied access on to a flight, are you saying that he could have renewed his passport early and sveral months were added to his passport which do not count towards the expiry date.
