A friend's combine started a fire when straw on a hot manifold caught fire (it was a very old combine, not like the air conditioned John Deeres you see today).
An electric tape fence can spark if the little wires are broken - I remember being able to see the sparks very clearly when it was dark. Perhaps that's a good time to check a fence for sparking

Well, I know for sure my electric fence is a collection of add-ons, not one complete line (in an ideal world it would be!). So, in winter it doesn't matter - and the sound of the snick is a good reminder to the escape-artist shetland that it's on.

NZ Neighbour says that during the hottest summer months in New Zealand, it is actually forbidden to do any topping, because of the possibility of blade hitting rock as previously mentioned.

A fire in a field near us some time ago was caused by a worn out bearing in an old round baler. It dried out and built up enough heat to ignite the straw. Several acres (and all the bales) gone before the pompiers arrived. Luckily the driver was able to unhitch the baler and get the tractor out of the way once he spotted the trail of flames behind him. :o

@niemeyjt Think I've just been reading the same article - “If this negligence is at the origin of the destruction causing irreversible damage to the environment, a sentence of up to five years in prison could be on the table,”

From the link: "It is thought that there was a piece of metal not attached properly to the vehicle, which kept trailing along the tarmac."

I have seen marks on the tarmac many times from this type of thing here in Brittany. Sometimes continuous for several Km.

Here more details of events in the Gironde. The fires have destroyed an area as big as Nantes (that's only relevant if you know Nantes .... just as bad as describing an area as "x" number of football pitches)

I wonder how many Olympic Swimming Pools of water have been used by firefighters.

Believe me, I've been thinking exactly the same thing. Sometimes they use sea-water and they try to use non-drinking water reservoirs. But I doubt that's always possible ...

Two fires in our department, well south and east of us. One was a farmhouse and hangar. The hanger was stocked with hay and contained 100 bullocks. They managed to save most of the bullocks. I have never understood people who stock hay or straw in a building where animals are housed, shut in. I believe in the UK it is against the law to have animals and hay/straw in the same building. No so in France.
The other fire is more serious, a forest though there's no news yet as to whether it was contained during the night. Fortunately there is very little wind ...
