Most reports indicate that the séisme was actually either 3,7 or 3,9 (depending on the publication) rather than 4 or above.
The one that occurred a few miles from us, out to sea, was only 2,7 but because it was so close, it was impressive.

4.2 is a tea cup rattler. Major structural damage is unlikely unless the structure is badly maintained.

A 4.2 should not do that.

New Zealand suffers around 1 earthquake per day at 4.5 or less.

There must be some special conditions that causes that much damage.

Behicourt in the Pas de Calais region. They suffered a bad storm just after the earthquake.

The earthquake in Morbihan doesn't seem to have caused any damage. Bihucourt in Pas de Calais was hit by a tornado, rather than an earthquake, which did cause severe damage.
