Happy Halloween

So glad we're too rural for the village trick or treaters to visit us!

There's been much talk about the cobweb decoration this year - not to use it outdoors, as it traps birds and allsorts in it. Halloween will never be the same in S Korea now. :(

As said above, kids used to do a bit of dressing up and have their own little party - it just gave them a theme. Never went trick or treating as a youngster, and never encouraged our own children to do so.

From the little I know about the pagan origins of halloween - people dressed up as Saints and went around the houses to keep the ghosts etc. away. Now people dress up as the ghosts and beasties - so, that all makes sense then!

Beginning to sound like a Baa Humbug myself now!

We've had some delightful small children call by this evening .. suitably attired in homemade Halloween costumes.
Nobody demanded anything .. all were offered sweets which they took with shy grins and which they then stashed away in their little Halloween bags.
Pleasantries were exchanged and Mums, Dads and Grannies accompanying the impish children were charmingly friendly.

I’m with the grandsons who wanted to go and play football in the park next door. After lunch we marched down to the football cage ball in hand, the place was decked with spider webs and and spookies, lots of kids in costumes and parents in tow, all quite non French.

Boys play football for half an hour and another couple of boys and a girl want to join in. All had a great time then another young boy dressed as ghoul wanted in - mami had to divest him of uniform and away he went. I really enjoyed the afternoon, the joy the children had and the sharing that sometimes only they are capable of showing.

We didn't have any callers last night, which didn't really surprise me as it had been hissing down relentlessly since lunchtime. I had a bag of mini Mars ready to prove that I'm not a complete witch.

An issue which seems to be exclusive to certain UK areas is that of mischief night, the 30 of October it became a bit of a thing a few years ago, although Covid seems to have broken the idea somewhat
Because the emergency services focused on Halloween little sh!ts went out and caused trouble the night before

Having such an event as the nights draw in does not seem to be so terrible therefore. I am not sure that celebrating the misdeeds and execution of rebellious Catholics is necessarily a good thing in hindsight.
A different story if Mr. Fawkes & Co. had been successful. A proper celebration.

Despite significant planning and massive clandestine preparations Guy Fawkes failed to kill the reigning monarch and turn parliament into an anarchic rabble.

Liz Truss did it in one day!

What, too soon?
