2023 Census?

Have you got yours yet? ours came yesterday evening, first time I can remember having to do one, at least it can be done online.

The 19th is the date from which you can register on-line, I dont know if you actually get any paperwork to fill in.

If you don't want to do it on line there is the option to fill in the questionnaire on paper.

Census used to be taken in alternate years in different regions. Anyone have a link to an official census site for more info?

I am a Census Co-Ordinator, that is to say one of the umpteen unpaid Councillors in rural communes who have the responsibility of making sure the census runs smoothly.
I spent this afternoon out and about with one of our Enumerators in one of the more remote corners of our commune trying to double check the situation on the ground with the computer printouts listing all the properties.

Communes of fewer than 10 000 inhabitants are subject to the census every 5 years on a rolling problem (albeit Covid messed the schedule up). In bigger communes of over 10 000 inhabitants the census samples a random sample of the population every year.

If your small town/village is up for the census in 2023, each and every household will receive a letter of information about it before 19th January. These are delivered by the Agents Recenseurs, appointed and paid by the Mairie and officially registered and issued with an ID badge. They and us, the Councillors, receive full training by an INSEE person who goes around each and every village making sure we all knwo what we are doing.

The census period runs from 19th January to 18th February 2023.

Each and every household will receive, from 19th January, the notices they need with their individual ID codes and instructions on how to fill them in online - which is a lot easier to do than the paper ones.

If you need help the Agent Recenseur will come to your house, or you will be able to go to your Mairie where they will hold sessions (Permanences) to help people - look out for local notices about these sessions.

Completing the census forms is a legal requirement as in the UK (if any Brexiteers or bolshy others get on their high horses).

You have to fill in the forms in French (we are in France after all)
However there is info available in foreign languages on the website and also it should be available from your Agent Recenseur if you ask.

Note these are examples, you MUST fill in the French forms you have been issued with as they have your property code on them, either on paper or better still online

WHY DOES YOUR COMMUNE WANT TO COUNT YOU?
The simple answer is that each and every extra head counted goes towards the figures used to calcuate the dosh they may get from central and regional govt sources. to cover everything from refuse collection to road repairs on rural lanes
A second home counts as a 1 person equivalent

But are you due this year? I checked through Liz's link and found that our commune is not due for a couple of years

Our commune must not be too important. I put the name in the box on the link and it came back with "La commune PLOUGONVER sera concernée en 2027 et chaque habitant sera recensé." and it is several years since we've had one here.
