I see now that the small groove that was a puzzle is simply to get to open when in the closed position as on a penknife blade.

Elsie's link says it cleans paint rollers? Dunno, maybe you put the metal wire 7 shape into the "bottle opener" notch to clear off the metal. Otherwise?

I've always used a flat scraper to do this.
