OK for you maybe but I was a bit upset 'cos everyone was so nice there was nobody to argue with.

It reminds me of a story told by an OFSTED inspector. He said that he had, while he was an inspector/advisor, walked into a classroom where all the children were busy working and after a short while realised that there was no teacher. When he asked where she was the children replied that they hadn’t seen her that day. He sent a child to the office to ask if they knew that the teacher wasn’t there and asked how long it would have been before the class missed their teacher. One child replied, we would probably have been OK until Thursday. The Inspector later discovered that the missing teacher was probably the best prepared and organised teacher he had ever come across, quickly adding that he couldn’t expect everybody to be like that.Obviously when the cat’s away good mice just get on with it.

Excellent!
I had a memorable experience with a class during a visit from an inspector, although not on the same scale.
This was a visit from a local inspector rather than from Ofsted, an inspector of maths, for goodness sake, and a well-known writer of ‘new maths’ books. My lesson was French with 8 year olds.
French teaching in primary schools was an experiment at that time, we had to work from the plans and tapes provided, and we often had visitors from all over the country, so a stranger sitting at the back was not a new experience for the children.
As a young teacher I had frequent bouts of laryngitis and that was, unfortunately, one such occasion; our headteacher tried to get the inspector to excuse me but he wouldn’t have it.
My lovely class just got on with it, with me clapping my hands and hoarsely whispering to them when to change activity - to greet one another in pairs and introduce themselves to one another, play a very simple game of lotto, which they really enjoyed and frequently asked for, adding nouns as they got to know them, and to sing a couple of songs. They were splendid and I recall the class with great fondness.
