I used to love visiting St Malo by boat.

@DominicBest The wait for a place in any of the marinas is apparently at least 10 years. Even moorings in the area are hard to come by. What is bizarre is that there are some boats in an appalling state taking up marina space but nothing seems to be done to remove them.

Most marinas seem to have their share of unused boats often in a filthy state; unused toys unfortunately.

Assuming the mooring fees are paid, what does it matter. Unless of course the posers on the nearby gin palaces feel offended by the scruffy neighbours.

I have a small cheap elderly low maintenance boat and my big luxury is keeping it in a west coast marina. I don’t use it enough but I’m sure I use it a lot more than the majority of the boats there get used. There must be a huge amount of wealth tied up everywhere in boats and camping cars that spend their who life waiting to be used.
The marina prices are in fact very reasonable compared with a lot of other places in France and cannot be compared to prices in the south of England. The whole thing, pontoons, cranes, security etc are run by the commune which provides a lot of employment for the locals and keeps the prices down. It’s a great facility.
The most impressive old yacht ‘graveyard’ I know is in Marans inbetween the Marais Potevin and the sea. There is a community of elderly ocean going yachts there in various states of renovation/disrepair. Decades of peoples’s dreams past and present. The charges there are cheaper than on the coast as it’s a fair trip down to the locks and the sea.
If I lived further north I’d love to keep the boat on the Villane behind the barrier but I think that would be expensive. I miss visiting St Malo by boat because the coastline and outlying rocks and isles there are beautiful but I don’t miss the tides and tidal gates and the complications that they add to navigation.

It matters a great deal to those who would like to use their boats but cannot get a mooring !!!

@DominicBest Moorings on the Rance behind the barrage are far cheaper than outside but I don't know the rates. But as you say, there are restrictions with tides and the lock. There is a boat graveyard on the Rance, near Saint Malo, at a place called Quelmer :

That’s good to hear. You’ve got the best of all worlds there, access to the sea when you want and a good inland waterway to use when conditions aren’t so good.
Today is the absolute calm after the storm, it’s like a mill pond here. Hopefully a sea breeze will appear later this afternoon.

Ah, I've misunderstood !! The Vilaine isn't anywhere near Saint Malo !

It’s the same sort of thing only the Villaine doesn’t have the advantage of the tidal generator.
