From what I can see of the tree trunk, that tree was not felled by a rank amateur as there's evidence of the notch & hinge cut.
A tree of that size is not easily brought down & was not simply sawn horizontally through.
I suspect it's not just the work of a solo kid unless he had good tutors.

That’s being commented on. Either he’s local and been legally felling trees for years or he hasn’t been alone, perhaps he’s taking the rap for a lesser sentence than an adult would get

I wondered whether they were after the trunk but were disturbed.

And it would not be a baby Lidl special chainsaw either. This would have been a very chunky long bladed saw and definitely not the sort of thing a 16 yo would have in the shed.

We had our doubts about a 16 year old given the way it had been cut. It looked far too professional .....
Shame if he's to take the blame.

Perhaps unlikely. The nearest road is 400m away and over rough terrain. It would need some serious off-road transport to recover the trunk.

You took the words out of my mouth, having cut down a few trees that looks like a pro job very neat. When we was young we could have carried a chainsaw for miles, a few hundred meters is nothing for a youngster, they really should stand the tree up again and hang the bas**** from it.

Mortified yes, hammered no. A 16 yr old is not a child, but de facto an adult, unless mentally disabled. If it's proved to be his work, I'd give him a spade and make him plant 200 trees (by hand) as a punishment.

I thought 16 was still considered a juvenile (I've been away too long !) And isn't a 16 year old is still a minor, therefore under the responsibility of his parents ?
I totally agree about the planting of trees as a punishment !
