Tabac to sell ammunition to chasseurs

The Minister of the Interior wants to allow tabacs to sell ammunition from the beginning of 2024. Apparently it will ease the problem of chasseurs acquiring ammunition as most armuriers seem to be in bigger towns and cities rather than in far flung rural areas. It would seem that many chasseurs get their ammo sent by post

Perhaps they should sell guns too as it would compensate for the income lost from the reduction in cigarette sales!

That was my first thought, tagh. The Government is committed to reducing tobacco use (at least in theory) so why not allow tabacs to diversify? There are many more smokers in France than hunters and not all hunters are homicidal maniacs which seems to be the implication here. I don't suppose the ammunition will be sold to anyone without a valid permis which is already the case in dedicated shops at present.

They will also be limited in the sort of ammo they can sell. They'd have to be pretty careful or they could lose their business.

I don't believe that hunters are homicidal maniacs but they are bloody dangerous. Not just with their guns but teararsing round country lanes when informed on their mobiles that prey has been spotted somewhere else.

Yes ammo is available in some other shops, it is also true that gun shops are closing, why shouldn't they be allow to sell it to licenced owners, back in the UK you had to produce ID and your shotgun certificate to purchase the cartridges, I think that it will only be cartridges that they will be selling, to buy ammo for other guns /rifles is a different ball game and was stricter in the UK you had to have a Firearms certificate, I assume it is here. There is health warnings on cigarettes, never seen any on a shotgun cartridge

"From January 1, 2024, tabacs that wish to sell category C ammunition will have to complete two days of training validated by the Professional federation for careers in weapons and munitions, FEPAM (Fédération Professionnelle des Métiers de l’Arme et de la Munition).

“This training will ensure that the munitions are kept securely and that only people with valid permits can purchase Category C ammunition,” announced the Interior Ministry.

Category C munitions include shotgun shells, smoothbore cartridges and carbine ammunition. It does not include armour piercing or explosive rounds or 20mm calibre rounds for rifled barrels."

Dammit, I shall have to get my armour piercing rounds somewhere else!
