A heartwarming tale before tomorrow's extremes

#1 Post by glazedallover »

I rode my electric Cargo bike down to the forest yesterday morning with my dog to take her for a shady walk. While we were strolling someone purloined my vehicle nd we had to walk another 6.5 Km home. I had the bright idea of posting this theft on the local fb group, and the response and number of shares was overwhelming, so much so , that at 8.30pm the Maire's son and daughter had delivered th bike back to me. She had spotted the bike from the road very close to the point that it had been stolen from, called her brother and he had gone with a van to pick it up.

Just shows the power of social media and in some cases how it can be put to good effect. Also what a great community I am lucky enough to reside in.

Warmed the cockles of me 'eart it did.

People are very quick to condemn FB but local groups can be a mine of information. Many a lost dog has been returned to its owner after shares on FB.

I think the amount of 'noise' on fb must have made the thief realise that he was never going to shift the bike quickly or locally. There were over 1000 shares within hours and I even got a response from the USA........amazing.

The Gendarmerie have successfully used FB to find missing vulnerable persons. Time is often of the essence and social media can spread the word quickly.

I've seen many things that have been found and returned to their owner on the local fb group - bus passes, sports bags etc left by children, various cards, keys .....

Phew, what a relief! Mr B would go absolutely spare if someone nicked his prize e-bike. It's great when media platforms can "work their magic". I follow a group called "Pattes en cavale 24" on FB, and it's so heartwarming when people rally about helping one another.

What a great community you have!

If only more people realised what a buzz they get from being nice to others - wouldn't the world be a different place?

Just digressing, but another "borrowed" bike story: A few years ago we had an almighty rave going on a few km's up the road from us. Many festival goers chose to go along our road, as their GPS took them that way (although further up the road they would all have to traverse the river Isle! ). Anyway, most were walkers - having (I guess) been dropped off at the end of the road where it meets the Dept route. One bright spark in the evening thought they needed wheels instead of feet, so yanked my ancient, notworking-justfordecoration bike out of the undergrowth at the bottom of our drive. Probably flat tyes, seized brakes, but the killer was that it only had one pedal! I found it dumped in the entrance of the driveway! I wonder what colourful language they used when they realised - haha!

How fortunate your bike was returned to you. I have found our little town's FB page can be very informative. I have a look at it each day.

You are all very lucky indeed. Mrs. H used to look at FB years ago and got ripped off €200 on a scam FB seller. These days I have tried to make sense of the selling site in Brittany but can't get anywhere with it at all. OH is sending items to UK for a friend to sell on ebay for her. Bit of a pain really.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.
