My mum died nearly 3 years ago in UK. At the time because of covid restrictions I watched her service via video link.
I wanted a small portion of her ashes, which are still in a cupboard along with the ashes of 2 cats. I intend to plant all ashes in a garden pot with her favourite flowers, freesias. There was no complication bringing them to France, just a certificate from the undertaker.
On a similar subject, I recently found out that if you die alone, in your house here, it is against the law to be cremated in case at some stage they need to exhume the body. Frightens me, as I'm alone so often.

The SNSM (French lifeboats) will take ashes out to sea and scatter them (family can go too) for a fee.
One of our colleagues said he was given an urn to scatter the ashes, but the humidity had made the ashes rock hard. They were well encrusted inside the urn and he had to try to scrape them out discretely without the family seeing ....

The doctor just put it down to old age - she was only 85. She was pretty fit when we took her out for lunch 2 weeks earlier

I've got a feeling that in the case of old age that no longer applies .. unless there are possibly 'dubious' circumstances surrounding the death.
