I think that today that still largely applies but with the caveat not if what you have written is offensive,racist,sexist,homophobic etc then there needs to be some control

As far as I know, MLP hasn't been convicted for offending anyone, being racist, sexist, or homophobic. (Besides, there are a lot of coloured people in the RN, a lot of women and homosexuals, including among the leaders !). She was convicted to prevent 13 million voters from voting for her and 37% of French people from adhering to her ideas...
What will be the next step ? Removing members of the RN and other patriotic parties from the electoral rolls ?
