I remember regularly passing the huge display of roses at Harkness Roses premises in Hitchin. Now long gone, unfortunately.

A lot of the more modern roses seem to be for colour or looks. What I look for when choosing a rose is the smell. There's an old boy nearby who has a wonderful red climbing rose and I take a good deep sniff every time I pass. Unfortunately he doesn't know its name.

I have been looking everywhere for a yellow rose called Belle Blonde. This happened to be the name also of my first horse, a filly that I bought at Sandown park sellers plate.
