This has turned into something really ugly. Initially students decided to protest against the conditions they were expected to work in : buildings in need of repair and updating, overcrowded classroom and an inadequate number of teachers. They have been encouraged by the far left, LFI, to manifest in any way they like. It's also been said that some teachers initially support the protests.
These school kids (because that's what they are) were too naïve to have realised that the casseurs would join in and cause violence and destruction. They probably envisaged a peaceful demonstration outside their schools, waving banners and asking for change. They totally misjudged the effect their actions would have, and the ensuing violence and destruction.
It's certainly been a wake-up call for the lycéens, most clearly had no idea what they were unleashing, and neither did their parents.
The parents should have realised that any sort of nationwide manif carried a huge risk of degenerating. These kids are supposed to be in the last 3 years or so of their school education, and preparing for higher education or whatever career they have chosen.
My question to all the parents of these school kids is "If so many kids are unhappy with the conditions at school, why aren't you, as parents, doing something to support them ?" It's not for children to take to the streets, it's for their parents to take up their cause with the schools if they feel it's justified.
Finally, seeing these thugs setting fire to fire engines makes me sick to the stomach after what the pompiers have been through this summer.

Far too many see problems for others, even their children, as not my problem.
And I agree that subversion by the casseurs will not help what looks like a legitimate issue.

One news source reported that nearly 400 schools had to be closed. Maybe they should remain closed until both parents and the little darlings learn how to bring about change without disruption and violence. And let the pompiers ignore the fires that break out. See how they cope in the schools badly damaged by the fires they brought about. If they want to live in a war zone, send them off to war. There's always one going on somewhere.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

There are some genuine causes for complaint in schools : large classes are unsuitable for both teachers and pupils alike. Have more, smaller classes ? Sounds ideal but school are having problems replacing staff as it is, particularly mid-term, let alone finding extra teachers. Not everyone wants to teach in education nationale either - many prefer the smaller private schools where they say the pupils are generally better behaved and better mannered. This I have heard from several teacher friends. And understandably, not everyone wants to work in a lycée in Paris or Marseille "working class areas" (quartiers populaires).
It's likely that most of the vandalism and violence has been committed by people from outside and that will certainly have muddied the waters for what are probably legitimate problems. What I found desperate was that the school kids were following the casseurs, phones in hand, going ooooh, aaaah and giggling as if the whole thing was a game. There was a nice moment when a father appeared, grabbed his little shite by the collar and hauled him off home. More parents should have done the same instead of berating the police for charging at their little brats.
How many times have manifs ended up in violence and destruction ? Gilets Jaunes and farmers for starters, and now this. Can they not see that whilst manifesting is a right and a way to air grievances, they so often get hijacked by thugs and the original reasons for manifesting in the first place get swept under the carpet as everyone counts the cost of the damage. On TF1 news tonight, they were saying the cost of repairs will be millions. No prizes for guessing who'll end up paying ....
Apologies for the rant ...
