Quite right Dominic and the theory that an old paper licence lasts forever is incorrect, until her 70th birthday, then she can't drive, the position my OH finds herself in now.

The only reason mine is now plastic, and limited to 15 years, is because of frequent medicals to keep the PL entitlement.
I take it you are referring to UK licences, French paper ones were for life.
