How to check someone out?

You may be able to do a temporary repair using a hot glue gun.

HDPE (high density polyethylene) is as you say impossible to glue (except when it is used on the lid of a superglue tube where miraculously it stops the lid being removed when you next come to use it  ) however hot glue used in this sort of application welds, rather than glues, and the sticks are based on Polyethylene (the PE of HDPE). Make sure you get the heated nozzle right up to the break, rather than just dripping glue onto the break.

However this will only be temporary I suspect since after that length of usage the plastic is likely to be towards the end of its useful life due to environmental impacts (oxygen and uv light degradation).

As for the company not supplying directly, this is quite feasible. If he has been offered sole distributorship for France, this will prevent any other official distributor or the company itself from supplying. The rest of the story however does sound more than a bit dodgy. You could always confirm his position by contacting the manufacturer.

Thanks Exile, I have been trying a soldering iron and some cable ties which I have melted in to the apparent area that is leaking, I will see if that has any effect but can foresee it being no good

Cable ties are nylon and not compatible with HDPE

I've always worked on the basis that if something doesn't feel right it usually isn't - it's never let me down - yet.

It may work but only by holding both sides of the break close together, not because the break has been fixed unless your soldering iron has melted enough of the HDPE to form a proper seal.

When you turn this item upside down there are a ring of what I would call machining holes about 12 around the rim, it is one of them that suddenly has developed a leak, anyway I bout a glue gun about 100 years ago so have gone over the top of my cable tie repair filled the rest of the little holes up with it and run it around the rim, will water test tomorrow. Could not actually see the hole / leak just water coming out

Why bother chasing British suppliers? You are in Europe, if you cannot find what you need in France, try Holland or Germany or Italy. Here is one from Holland https://filtreco.nl/en/filters/

Yes but they do not do the exact filter I require and again have you seen the prices, especially of the drum filters, loads of moving parts, an invitation to disaster, always going wrong Thanks anyway.

Here's a dodge for repairing plastic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq5YJbZXaZk

If you search YouTube for "super (or cyanoacrylate) glue and baking (or bicarbonate of) soda" there are a multitude of uses portrayed.

I just bought a larger amount than usual (2 x 25g bottles) of glue, very cheap, on AliExpress, and a kilo of sodium bicarb on Amazon, and will start experimenting when they arrice.
